Mast Cell Activation Protocol
Read the article “Is Histamine Intolerance The Cause of Your Bloat, or Head Symptoms?”
For people dealing with mast cell activation, antihistamines may or may not make this worse. Since antihistamines only block the H1 or H2 receptors, this may drive excess histamine to bind to H3 and H4 receptors.
If you are dealing with headaches, nausea, vomiting, vertigo, circadian rhythm problems, arousal, insomnia, appetite issues, memory problems, learning, and body temperature problems to begin with, these symptoms are more related to H3 and H4 receptors and you may not be a good candidate for OTC anti-histamine medication.
If antihistamines are being used with mast cell activation, then it’s really important to also take either medications or supplements that will help stabilize mast cells and support histamine pathways in the body.
The goal when treating excess histamine and mast cell activation, is to lower histamine load, stabilize mast cells, reduce mast cell density, and work to support all the pathways that support histamine breakdown.
Eating and Lifestyle Changes:
- Eliminate foods high in histamine (for at least a month). Since I work with a lot of patients with SIBO, I do use the Bi-Phasic Histamine Diet as a regroup for these patients.
- Restore gut function
- Address dysbiosis, if needed
- Settle down your stress response: get your mind off your health, take breaks from researching, get back to things that bring you joy.
- Remove drinks that block the DAO enzyme: alcohol, tea (black, green and mate), energy drinks

- Quercetin 500 (by Metagenics) – 1000-2000mg a day in divided dosages – stabilizes mast cells
- Natural D-Hist (by Ortho Molecular Products) – This contains Nettles, which reduces mast cell density, co-factors vitamin B6 and pathway support: magnesium, zinc, selenium, bromelain, curcumin and bioperine (stabilize mast cells), NAC, flavonoids, and ALA.
- Complete Mineral Complex (by Designs for Health) – 1 with each meal (take with food)
- PEA (Palmitoylethanolamide) (by Bioclinic Naturals) – 2 capsules twice a day for three weeks, then reduce to 2 capsules daily ongoing (this is a substance that our body produces in our cells and it helps to reduce pain in the body. It also reduces histamine levels in the body).
- Histamine Block (DAO enzyme) (by Seeking Health) – 1000-2000mg a day in divided dosages – enzyme that converts histamine to histidine
